Jon M. Huntsman School of Business at Utah State University
BS: Finance, Economics, and Entrepreneurship
Minor: International Business

Picture
Taking charge of my education is important to me. I believe that college is about way more than just getting a piece of paper. I have been extremely fortunate to have received many great opportunities to get involved and gain experience during my time at Utah State.

Going into school I knew I wanted some kind of a technical degree. I actually started out in engineering, but really found my stride and passion in business school. Therefore, I chose to go with finance and economics based on the modeling and skills I would receive. However, I also wanted to take classes that were exciting and hands on. So I ended up taking many of the entrepreneurship and new venture planning classes. I believe that I have a unique blend of analytical skills, entrepreneurial spirit, and international experience as a result.

SEED Internship in Uganda

Picture
During the summer of 2010 I had the amazing opportunity to intern for the SEED Program in Masaka, Uganda.

The main responsibilities I was given was to teach business courses, mentor business owners, and issue loans to rural village groups around the Masaka, Uganda area. All of this was part of the 2010 expansion of the SEED Program into Africa. Having had no structure on the ground, it required a great deal of discipline and self-starting to be successful.

Out of four areas in the pilot launch, our area was the only area chosen to immediately receive new interns. It is now considered a permanent site and is able to rapidly expand based off of the model and relationships that my teammate and I created.

Main Highlights:
  • Found, taught, and formed women's solidarity groups and prepared them to receive micro loans
  • Organized groups with incentive systems to ensure social collateral
  • Issued 15 micro loans to women's groups to expand current projects (currently at a 100% payback)
  • Organized a collection system that could scale with the program and found innovative ways to reduce costs
  • Mentored and taught business owners in business strategy, cashflow management, and basic accounting

Entrepreneurship Club President

Picture
The club helps students learn how to develop and refine business ideas, recognize opportunities, launch, and sustain successful companies. To do this the club is divided into teams that specialize in a particular area of entrepreneurship and business development.

Main charge was to organize e-Week 2010 and 2011.

During my time with the eClub we had a great team and a ton of success. Nearly every metric doubled, including website traffic, participation in competitions, and overall attendance. This was accomplished by focusing on building a recognizable brand, building an effective team, and increasing marketing effectiveness.

Undergraduate Research

I have studied and presented research on applying financial models with Dr. Robert Malko. Specifically we researched the application of the Fama-French 3 Factor Model to regulated energy utilities to present at the 2010 Utah Conference for Undergraduate Research (UCUR). I am currently working on a paper that analyzes the risks of business start-ups in Uganda. This research will be presented to 2011 UCUR and Research on Capitol Hill.

Huntsman Scholars

Picture
The Huntsman Scholar Program is a multi-year, business honors program that aims to develop scholar-leaders who will make a positive difference in the world.  It introduces students to the integration of business and politics in an international context, and helps them develop a deeper sense of perspective on the role they can play in creating change at home, in their community and around the world.

I travelled in with a cohort to Switzerland, Belgium, and France during the Fall of 2009. During the same time, I worked on creating an expansion plan for a Utah Business to expand to Europe. This included a market assessment, defining perspective clients, identifying regulatory requirements, and analyzing the overall opportunity.

Koch Scholars

Picture
Koch Scholars draws distinguished undergraduate and graduate students from diverse backgrounds and brings them together to engage in civil dialogue about the principles and concepts that are presented in the selected books, movies and podcasts.

The program had an intense structure where we would read one or two books, create a blog post on them, and meet for dinner and discussion every week. Although it was difficult to meet the pace and keep up on the readings, it was absolutely rewarding to push myself to accomplish it.

The discussions were structured in a liberal arts format, and allowed the group to determine the discussions but often focused in on classical liberal information including liberty, freedom of choice, incentives, spontaneous order, and creative destruction, etc. The part I enjoyed and looked for the most was to study and try to understand the environment that builds and fosters innovation on both a macro scale and a micro scale. This includes information, incentives, and innovation stemming from prices in a free market, private property rights, and profit and loss.

Business Plan Writing

AggieAir

Picture

AggieAir is an unmanned aerial vehicle mapping and remote sensing technology that was created at Utah State University.

I was part of a group of students that wrote a business plan for potential investors.

Maria Antonio Corn Millers

Maria Antonio is a mill that processes dried corn by removing the outer shell and then grinding the kernel into a fine food grade flour that is used for a staple dish called posho.

Although the actual business model is very basic, it involved a lot of cultural translation and market information. It was written for Bernard Kazibwe in Kigoonya, Uganda.
